Dear Families
Thank you to all those who attended our special breakfast last Wednesday to help celebrate an early Father’s Day. I would also like to thank the staff and students who assisted in making this morning a success. The centre of our school link area was filled with excited students, family members, the smell of coffee, warm croissants, laughter and conversation. We celebrated not just our dads but all the special people in our lives who love, guide and care for us every day. Whether it’s fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or family friends, these fantastic role models work hard to support us. They can inspire us to be our best, cheer us on when we try something new, and are there with words of wisdom and encouragement along our journey.
Last week, ten students were randomly drawn to celebrate their ‘Heart Rewards.’ Students are recognised for acting on the values of Compassion, Honesty, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Gratitude based on our Josephite charisms. Showing kindness toward others, being honest even when it may be difficult, including others who need a friend, or cleaning up our environment are just some of the actions being recognised.
Leadership also recognises classes that consistently demonstrate excellence in behaviour, readiness to learn, and respect for all. Students are excited to work collectively as a team to complete their Heart Charts. Once completed, students will decide on a worthy celebration to share together.
Recognition can support students in understanding that values like honesty, compassion, inclusion, sustainability, and gratefulness are not just abstract ideas but practical behaviours that can make a positive difference. It connects their actions with the school’s mission and helps them develop these important character traits.
This week, we recognise and give thanks to our amazing teacher assistants, who work alongside our teaching staff and support students every day. We are all grateful for the love, support, and care they provide and for making a difference.
As we welcome spring, we hope for sunshine and vitamin D in the next few weeks. Spring often brings longer days, blooming flowers, and renewed hope and vitality. This parallels how we can spiritually renew ourselves, letting go of the old and embracing the new with God's guidance.
‘For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land’. — Song of Solomon 2:11-12
Yours in partnership

Spelling Mastery
At SHU students from Grades 3 - 5 participate in Spelling mastery of a morning from 8:50 - 9:25.
Spelling Mastery builds dependable spelling skills for students in primary grades through a highly structured method that blends the following approaches:
- Phonemic approach - helps beginning spellers learn the relationships between spoken sounds and written letters and then apply them to spelling
- Morphemic approach - exposes advanced spellers to prefixes, bases, and suffixes
- Whole-word approach - gives spellers at all levels the meaning and root of a word and shows how the word's spelling is influenced
Spelling Mastery interweaves these three approaches according to students' skill development. It provides straightforward lessons to help efficiently and effectively teach the spelling skills students need to become proficient readers and writers. Explicit instruction, careful selection of spelling words, and repeated and cumulative practice help students master each concept and reinforce and retain key information.
