Dear Parents/Carers
I hope all students, staff, and families had a restful and enjoyable break. Over this period, taking a break from screen time and enjoying reading a book felt healthy. In today's digital age, technology is an integral part of our daily lives. However, as we embrace the conveniences of technology, it's essential to be mindful of its potential impact on our social connections, physical presence, children’s language development, and reading skills.
Research and evidence indicate that excessive screen time can inadvertently hinder children's crucial language acquisition and literacy development stages. One study suggests that the average toddler misses out on hearing more than 1,000 words spoken by an adult daily due to screen time.
While technology can be a valuable tool for learning and entertainment, it's equally important to recognise the benefits of boredom and unstructured play in fostering creativity and cognitive development in children. I have had the privilege of watching and observing my grandchild play over the break. Some key points are worth reflecting on when we think about unstructured play.
Unstructured play can…
Stimulate Creativity: Boredom encourages children to use their imagination and creativity to entertain themselves, leading to the development of problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
Encourage Exploration: Boredom motivates children to explore their environment and discover new interests, fostering curiosity and a sense of wonder.
Develop Independence: When left to their own devices during moments of boredom, children learn to rely on themselves for entertainment, fostering independence and self-reliance.
Enhance Social Interaction: Boredom often leads to spontaneous play with siblings or friends, promoting social interaction, collaboration, and the development of interpersonal skills.
Sometimes…by embracing boredom, we can provide opportunities for children and adults to experience unstructured play, thus creating a balanced environment that nurtures creativity, problem-solving, social interaction, language development, reading skills, and a love of finding something to do other than screen time.
One of my favourite reminders in the cooler months is a quote: “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” This wonderful Norwegian saying translates to ‘There is no bad weather, only bad clothes!’ So, whilst the weather can be cool, wet, and windy, enjoy spending time outside in the elements of nature.
Thank you to all those who encourage and continue to support our Sacred Heart school values. This term, we will focus on the values of Compassion and Gratitude.
Yours in partnership

Mersey Leven Catholic Parish - Sacramental Program
Our Sacramental students are now in their preparations for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation within the Catholic Church. The Sacrament calls us to renew and confirm Baptismal promises. We will celebrate Confirmation on Sunday 11th August at Sacred Heart Church.

Staff Professional Learning Day - Monday 22nd July, 2024
On Monday our staff participated in our ‘All System Professional Learning Day’. This provided staff with an opportunity to;
- listen to leaders and industry experts about the Science of Learning.
- engage in professional conversations unpacking key concepts and theories.
- practice using resources to enhance planning and instruction.
The three sessions covered The Components of Writing by Lyn Stone, Rosenshine's 17 Principles of Instruction and Shaping Minds maths resources with Jordan O'Sullivan.
Thank you to all families who supported our Warmer Winter Drive last term. All donations were collected by Michael from Gran's Table and will be shared with St Vincent de Paul. Michael and Karen, from Gran's Table and St Vincent de Paul, were extremely grateful for the generosity shown by our school community.

Keeping our community well:
With the cooler months upon us, please be mindful of not sending your children to school when they are unwell. We are currently experiencing staff and student absences due to sickness.
It is also important to remember that staff and students are required to isolate at home for 48 hours when they have any gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and/or Diarrhoea).
If your child is not attending school, please remember to mark them as absent/unwell on Compass.
On Wednesday 3 July, Kinder Kookaburras and 3/4 Emus celebrated the end of term with their buddies. They walked to Buttons Beach and had a sandcastle building competition. The weather was beautiful and many treasures were found to add to the castles.
