Dear Families
This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday, the day which starts the special events of Holy Week. Holy Week is a significant week for us as a Catholic community as it encapsulates the foundational beliefs of our Christian faith. This particular time offers a sacred time for spiritual growth and renewal, provides opportunities for sacramental grace, and fosters communal unity and worship within the Church.
Palm Sunday is typically celebrated with special liturgies, including the blessing of palm branches and the reading of the Gospel accounts of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. You may hear your children come home and talk about this week, sharing some of their stories and excitement. This Sunday, March 24th, at 9:00 a.m., some of our students will be participating in the waving of the palms procession at Mass.
Over the last two weeks, students in years 3 and 5 have been participating in NAPLAN. I want to take this opportunity to thank the students and staff for their positivity in preparing, administering, and completing the tests. NAPLAN is administered annually and is just one of the many tools teachers use to assess students.
Next week, five staff members will be attending the ‘Teachers Matter Conference in Hobart.’ As a school, we continue our ‘Insight’ journey, and staff consistently develop knowledge and teaching pedagogies based on the latest research and evidence drawn from the Science of Learning. When visiting classrooms, there is a buzz; students are engaged and focused on their learning. The pace of instruction for teaching staff certainly energises the room. As a system, Catholic Education Tasmania is invested in teaching and learning with a focus on improving student outcomes and teacher practices.
Over the last week, our younger students have settled into the school routines. They appear more confident, knowing the expectations. It takes time for little people to feel confident, and a full week at school can leave many of them tired by Friday, ready for a weekend of downtime.
Mrs Lane and I will be taking some long service leave after Easter; during this time, Miss Davis, Miss McCormack, and Mrs Johnstone will be in leadership.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership
Charlene Best

Caritas - Project Compassion
Fourth Week of Lent
Memory is 26 years old and lives in rural Malawi. As the eldest child in a low-income farming family, Memory had to take on many household chores and farming activities to support her parents. They struggled to pay for Memory’s school fees and school supplies, and Memory often had to walk to school barefooted.
With the support of Caritas Australia and its partner the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM), Memory was able to enrol at a technical college where she learnt technical skills in carpentry. She undertook a three-year carpentry course, with CADECOM supporting part of her tuition and boarding fees.
Memory became the first female carpenter from her village. Today, she works as a carpenter at one of Malawi’s largest hydroelectric power stations. With the income from her job, she can provide financial support to her family and inspire other young women in her community so that they may have the opportunity to succeed in a male-dominated industry.
Partnership in action
The work of Caritas Australia is only possible with the dedication, passion and tenacity of local partners who implement the programs. They are the heroes on the ground, working tirelessly behind-the-scenes every day to create a better future for their communities.
Caritas Australia partners with the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) to support communities living in the Philippines. FCJ runs a number of programs that include house renovating, food processing, basic literacy skills, urban gardening, upcycling and income generating activities. They also have a clinic visited weekly by a doctor and community nurse.
Caritas Australia partners with Caritas Samoa to assist communities to have increased access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene to ensure human health and well-being by providing water tanks and sanitation facilities.
Caritas Australia partners with the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi through the A+ program. Since 2016, the A+ program has helped 7,397 families across Malawi improve their food security, access to basic water and sanitation, boost women’s income generation and strengthen child protection.Teaching Matters - Science of Learning National Summit
This Sunday Mrs Best, Mrs Lane, Miss Cook, Miss Allison and Mr Allison will be travelling to Hobart to attend the National Summit hosted by Catholic Education Tasmania.
This conference, tailored for teaching professionals, leaders and educators, showcases innovative pedagogical approaches founded in the Science of Learning. Attendees will interact with prominent national and international education experts, who will delve into the research supporting Science of Learning, offering best practice teaching methodologies through keynotes, workshops, panel discussions and Q&A sessions.
As a school, we are fortunate to be continuing our 'Insight' journey and look forward to sharing new learnings and resources from the conference.
Keeping our community well:
As we are entering the cooler months, please be mindful of not sending your children to school when they are unwell. We are currently experiencing staff and student absences due to sickness. If your child is not attending school, please remember to mark them as absent/unwell on Compass.
Compass Notifications:
Please make sure you are reading any Compass/Email communication from the school. This ensures effective communication.

North West Combined Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival
The annual carnival gives students from grades 3-6 the opportunity to represent their schools in a variety of swimming events. 25m races were held in freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke, a 25m freestyle relay, and 50m freestyle and backstroke.
Our team of 27 students represented the school with an awesome blend of fairness and competitive spirit. It was great to see our swimmers giving their all in their chosen events, and we even had some competitors swim in the grade above theirs to make up the numbers. The day was very successful for our team, and we took home a haul of ribbons that included 17 third places, 14 seconds, and 14 first places.
The team also showed the true spirit of SHS with lovely manners and excellent behaviour throughout the day.
A big thank you to Mrs Kelly, Mrs Richards, and Miss Rowe for their assistance with the team. Very well done everyone.
Mr Scott
